Steam Trap Monitoring
Reduction in steam losses through leaking steam traps. Prevent upsets due to plugged steam traps
Data Infrastructure: Smart Sensors & (Sub)-Metering - Industrial Energy Management Software - Smart Maintenance
Technology description
Emerson’s Wireless Acoustic Transmitter allows you to monitor your steam traps 24/7. It can diagnose both failed-open steam traps that leak steam, and those that have failed-closed or are blocked. Emerson’s new Plantweb Steam Insight technology can provide even further details into the health of your steam trap assets to ensure that you are recapturing any lost energy cost.
Directly mounts to process piping without cutting or changing pipe configurations for flexible, simple installation.
Steam Trap Monitoring software (optional) provides critical, real-time information on steam trap conditions.
Key features
- Avoids leaving condensate in steam pipes and equipment, for poor heat transfer
- Avoids water hammer, corrosion and erosion in equipment and pipes due to condensate in pipes
- Avoids steam disappearing into the condensate system, without transferring heat to the process
- Avoids increase in steam or energy consumption, make-up water and chemical use
Application fields
- Process and discrete manufacturing companies which are using steam in their production process
- Steam headers, individual high value steam traps (large orifice size, high pressure, ….)
Business case
Studies have shown that the life expectancy of most steam traps is in the range of four to eight years. For installations older than 10 years, up to 25% of the pots are demonstrably leaky, and up to 10% of the steam traps remain open and allow fresh steam to pass through.
Inspections
- Barking Power Lowers Steam Costs, Improves Efficiency with Wireless Acoustic Monitoring
- Sasol Technology R&D Saves Energy and Improves Productivity with Emerson’s Smart Wireless Acoustic Solutions
- Productivity Improvement with Wireless Steam Trap Monitoring
Tanatex Chemicals Germany claims that the steam lost calculated for 1 year is 40k€ for the 6bar steam system.
CO2 impact / Energy cost reduction
- More efficient use of boiler system and fuels hence less emissions
- Energy cost reduction typically 5- 20% reduction in steam trap losses
- ~5-10% or more steam traps leak per year
Non-energy benefits
- Avoids water hammer, corrosion and erosion in equipment and pipes due to condensate in pipes
