Mechanical Compression Heat Pump and Mechanical Vapour Recompression

Conversion of residual heat into usable process heat

Heat Pumps/Heat Transformers/Steam Recompression

Technology description

Heat pumps can contribute to an increased use of heat, which is now seen as waste heat.

Bronswerk Heat Transfer is the only Dutch company that designs, delivers, installs and fully integrates large industrial heat pumps into the existing process.

Bronswerk Heat Transfer can act as a project manager by – besides evaluating the various technical implications and possibilities – making economic assessments and helping obtain government subsidies.

Key features

  • Powerscale up to 10MW
  • COP target minimum
  • Upgrade to temperature levels of 130 oC

Application fields

  • Upgrade chemical plant effluent stream to usable heat input into for instance reboilers.
  • Taking heat from waste air stream from a paper mill and upgrade to LP steam as used for drying process.
  • Generating vacuum steam from waste heat and upgrade to LP steam using mechanical vapour recompression.

Business case

Validated case:

  • Steam-generating heat pump at Smurfit Kappa paper mill, in cooperation with IBK and ECN: generating 1.5 barg steam from 90->60 oC waste heat with COP between 2.5 and 4.5.
  • Mechanical vapour recompression at DSM Geleen generating 1.25 bara steam from 110->90 waste heat on large scale (10MW).

CO2 impact / Energy cost reduction

  • Energy reduction through reuseof residual heat
  • Electrification of remaining ~25% energy input

Non-energy benefits

  • Lower energy consumption leads directly to a reduction in operational costs
