Low Voltage Permanent Magnet Motors

Highest efficiency for low speed and high torque applications

Efficient Electric Motors

Technology description

ABB’s low voltage permanent magnet motors combines the high speed accuracy of synchronous technology -through permanent magnets attached to the surface of the rotor – with the robust design of induction motors, to deliver very high torque from small motor sizes at low speed, eliminating the need for gearboxes. The motors, designed exclusively for operation with a  ABB frequency converters, powers the application (pump, ..) directly, eliminating the losses caused by mechanical transmission equipment. Additionally, the use of synchronous motor technology ensures high efficiency.

Key features

  • Rotor magnetization by permanent magnets
  • Construction based on standard induction motor design for easy retrofit
  • Deliver sufficiently smooth torque across the lower speed range
  • Fewer components and more straightforward configuration
  • ABB low voltage permanent magnet motors deliver the highest efficiency in the market and – because the motor powers the application directly – the drivetrain system also provides the highest possible efficiency

Application fields

  • Low speed and high torque applications

Business case

CO2 impact / Energy cost reduction

  • The use of high-quality permanent magnets renders rotor windings and brush systems superfuous to achieve signicantly higher motor efficiency, as rotor losses are eliminated. Losses caused by mechanical transmission equipment are also eliminated.
  • Fewer components and more straightforward configuration not only saves energy and increases reliability, but also reduces plant engineering hours, pump skid and foundation size, maintenance costs, and spare part inventories.

Non-energy benefits

  • Lower maintenance cost
  • Reduced spare parts inventories
  • Easier system installation
  • Higher “system reliability”
  • No mechanical power transmission losses
  • More freedom in layout design
