Hybrid Boiler
Boiler where steam from natural gas is replaced by steam from renewable electricity at times when it is in surplus
Hybrid Boiler
Technology description
The energy transition creates framework conditions which call for increased flexibility and better redundancy. The hybrid boiler is a large-scale electrification solution for industrial companies, replacing natural gas steam production with steam from renewable electricity at a time when it is in surplus.
The unique thing about the hybrid boiler is the ramp up speed of 30 seconds on a scale of 25 MWe making it a commercially very attractive product for deployment to flex- and spare capacity markets.
Key features
- Instantaneous switch over from electric to gas firing and vice versa
- Steam conditions up to 50 bar(a), 500 °C
- Benefits from low electricity prices
- Hybrid boiler can operate at imbalance market
- Technology is part of SDE++ portfolio (2020)
Application fields
- Industrial steam producers: large, typical ETS-sized company
- Considerable E-connection essential (e.g. old CHP connection)
- Steam consumers with considerable electrical connection and access to the flex markets
Business case
- 25 MWe Hybrid Brownfield
- Fuel cost saving and CO2Â 600K EUR
- CAPEX (turnkey) 1,500K EUR -> R.O.I (excluding subsidy) <3 years
CO2 impact / Energy cost reduction
- Electrification
- Being able to buy electricity and natural gas at a more economical rate
- CO2Â reduction: 5500 tons/year (at 25 MWe Hybrid Boiler)
Non-energy benefits
- Improving operations by increasing redundancy
- Better (greener) image
- Ability to optimize and switch between sources (gas and electricity). Therefore less depending on gas, electricity and ETS costs
Technology deployed by
- Custom designed boiler solutions installed at various customers within Europe
- Technology ready for launching customer
