Retrospect side event Project 6-25 during EIES 2019

During the 3rd edition of the European Industry & Energy Summit 2019, FME organised a side event on Project 6-25 on 11 December 2019. This project aims to reduce 6 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions by 2025 by deploying proven innovative technological solutions. The large turnout, over 90 visitors, showed that there is interest in Project 6-25.

The first half of the program was dedicated to technological solutions. Seven technology partners gave a pitch on their innovative technology. The audience could vote for their favourite technology via Mentimeter. The audience favourite was QPinch: From Waste Heat to Process Heat. The second part of the program was dedicated to the financial aspects for the participants in this project. Project 6-25 partner Rabobank and FME went deeper into the current situation and how to arrive at a financial business model. This was followed by a panel discussion with government, companies and financial parties where seven propositions were discussed and the public could also give its opinion on these propositions via the voting button.

Please find below the outcome of the propositions on a scale of 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree):

  1. Industry decision makers often favour low return renewable projects while neglecting high return energy efficiency projects: 3.7
  2. Contracts between industrial end-users and solution- or service providers lack incentives for decarbonization: 4.5
  3. Energy efficiency investments have low priority as long term decarbonization options such as green hydrogen and electrification attract more management attention/engineering capacity: 3.7
  4. Energy- or carbon efficient technologies would get more industry market share if they would be sold as savings instead of products: 4.2
  5. SME’s are more open to financial propositions (project finance, esco etc) for energy efficiency projects than large companies: 3.4
  6. The current propositions from the banking sector hinder a fast energy transition and decarbonization: 3.6
  7. The implementation of energy efficiency measures are a no-brainer form financial-economic perspective. Due to lack of time, this proposition has not been addressed.

In addition to the great interest in the side event, the stand of Project 6-25 was also well visited during the two-day summit.
